Mend Physio help with:
Post Operation Rehabilitation
The success of your surgery doesn’t finish when you leave the hospital. Your surgeon will have performed a surgical procedure which is the first step towards getting you better.
To optimise your quick recovery you will have exercises to perform at home. The hospital will provide you with some simple exercises to minimise complications such as chest infection or deep vein thrombosis. You may even be prescribed some early strengthening or range of motion exercises.
Once you are discharged, you will commonly require re-assessment to check your progress.
Post-orthopaedic surgery, you will require an exercise program to fully regain your strength, flexibility and function. The quickest and safest way for you to return to your day to day activities is by consulting a physiotherapist experienced in post-operative rehabilitation.
Mend Physio can assist you in your post-operative care. We are familiar with the treatment protocols prescribed by most Orthopaedic Surgeons. We can also liaise with your surgeon to determine any specific requirements based on your individual surgery.
Mend Physio can develop a tailor-made rehabilitation program to ensure you make the best possible recovery in the quickest time, so you can get back to your work, sport or day to day activities ASAP!
Post Fracture Physiotherapy
It is always advisable to see a physiotherapist after you fracture or break any of your bones.
Most fractured (broken) bones will heal in usually six weeks.
However, when you have enough stress placed through your body to fracture a bone there’s usually a lot of other soft tissues and structures that have been damaged in the process. If you have been in plaster you will most likely suffer joint stiffness and considerable muscle weakness.
This may even effect joints that don’t seem related to the break. For example, a fractured shoulder may result in a very stiff elbow or wrist just because you were keeping your shoulder in a sling for a few weeks.
When Should You Commence Physiotherapy?
This varies depending on your type and location of the fracture. If you are consulting an Orthopaedic Surgeon, please be guided by their expertise. Otherwise, you may wish to raise the topic with your GP.
Typically, your physiotherapist will attempt to prevent post-fracture stiffness and weakness in the adjacent joints and muscles during the first six weeks while your fracture is healing. After six weeks or later if X-rays show poor healing, your physiotherapist can work on regaining full joint range of motion and muscle strength that operate near or over the fracture site.
If you believe you are not making satisfactory progress in your recovery, or if your mobility is compromised it may also be worth contacting Mend Physio for advice specific to your fracture.
